THE GREAT DANE

This regal breed combines great size and power with elegance. It is square-proportioned and well-balanced. Its gait is strong and powerful with long, easy strides. Its coat is short, thick and glossy. The Great Dane is most noteworthy for its majestic carriage and appearance. The Great Dane is sweet, eager to please, people-oriented, easy to house train, and he responds well to training using positive reinforcement. The Apollo of dogs, also known as gentle giants.

Despite his giant size, a Great Dane is mellow enough to be a good house dog, which makes this gentle giant suitable for apartment living as long as daily exercise is incorporated. He's relatively quiet indoors, but he needs a long walk at least once a day, or a large yard to play in. An adult Great Dane needs 30 to 60 minutes of daily exercise, depending on his age and activity level. Puppies and adolescents should be able to have free exercise (where they can play in a fenced area) but should not be taken on long walks or jogs until they are done growing.

The Great Dane is gentle, loving, easygoing and sensitive. It is generally good with children (although its friendly overtures may overwhelm a small child) and usually friendly toward other dogs and pets. It makes a pleasant, well-mannered family companion.

Neron RIP (Sep 4th, 2009 - July 13th 2015)

Neron was exactly what you expect from the great dane breed. He was a family dog first. He was that gentle giant you read about but he was also protective of his family.  Neron's name came from South America. It is pronounced "Na-Rown" Meaning STRONG.  This boy was my pride. Very well behaved.  He took very well to training.  His favorite thing to do was go for rides to the beach.  He didn't like the water (lakes, streams) too much but loves taking baths. He will remain in our hearts forever and forever missed.

Mercedes RIP (Jan 21st, 2013 - Jan 6th 2021)

Mercedes was one of the sweetest great danes that we ever had. She was very smart. She could open doors, squeeze through the cat door and quick to learn new tricks. She loved the water. When we could take trips to the river she would lay down in the water and looked like she was in heaven.  Unfortunately once she retired she grew irritable around puppies. It was a heavy decision we didn't make lightly but for her best interest, we rehomed her to one of our great dane families that was looking for an older dog. She spent the remaining joyous years with Fred and Rhonda. We couldn't thank you enough for giving Mercedes a retirement lifestyle full of love and happy memories.  Mercedes will forever be missed.
